Next week the National Genealogical Society 2014 Family History Conference will be held in Richmond, Virginia. Some people will be visiting the Library to do research on the descendants of John Page the Elder whose will was recorded in Gloucester County in 1774, of Charles Carter of Lancaster County and Shirley Plantation in Charles City County, and of William Byrd of Westover Plantation in Charles City County. Information about these families can be found in Petersburg City Chancery Cause admr. of John Page, the Elder, etc VS heirs of James Brown Sr., etc, 1846-040 and Petersburg City Chancery Cause admr. of John Page, the Elder, etc VS Benajah Thomas etc, 1846-041. These records are found on the Library of Virginia website under "Virginia Memory" and "Chancery Index".

These causes concern the ownership of land purchased in the "Hon. William Byrd Lottery". The first lottery of the land was held on November 2, 1768. William Byrd appointed trustees to sell the tracts of land, which they continued to do for many years afterwards. These Chancery Causes concern the ownership of certain lots of land that was located in Richmond.

Chancery Cause 1846-040 has 101 images. Here are the numbers of images that have information about the genealogies of the different families involved in this Chancery Cause. Images 11-16 is the copy of the Bill of Revivor. Images 91 and 95 is the "Memorandum of parties residence" which is divided into two list. The first list the names of the defendants and where they lived. The second list that has the names of Virginia cities and counties and list the names of the defendants living in each location.

Chancery Cause 1846-041 has 136 images. Here are the numbers of the images with the most information about the families. Images 14-19 is the copy of the Supplemental Bill and bill of revivor that list family names. Images 20 and 22-23 is copy of the list the heirs of Benajah Thomas. Images 65-70 is a copy of the "Memo: for subpoena" that list the heirs of John Page, Sr, Charles Carter and William Byrd of Westover.

For people interested in the suit and not the genealogy here is a list of images with information for the each cause. Chancery Cause 1846-040 images 62 -64 has the copy of the Notes for the Plaintiff, images 65-67 has the copy of the notes for Brown's representatives, images 68-72 has the copy of the notes by the counsel for the plaintiff. Copies of deeds appear on images 73-90.

Chancery Cause 1846-041 images 24 -33 are copies of the answers of the defendants. Images 75-76 is a copy of an account of John Page, Senior's estate. Images 77-121 are copies of deeds. Image 122-127 is a copy of a plea heard before the Superior Court of Law for the Richmond District on 10 September 1804 in the suit Byrd's Trustee VS Thomas which was a suit of ejectment. Images 128 -133 has a copy of the transcript of James Lyle VS Charles Carter, only surviving trustee of William Byrd Esq. which started 7 April 1788. The transcript was made on 25 December 1772.

These Chancery Causes show that genealogical information can be found in causes that do not concern estate disputes.
