Hello,
In transcribing all of the Johnsons on the Personal Property Tax Lists of
Goochland County, I ran into a puzzle. For first names that were used several
times, there was an occupation (overseer, carpenter, etc.) or geographic
location (Cross roads) next to each name, presumably to distinguish one from
another.
So here is an odd question. In 1794, both William Johnson and David Johnson
were noted as "hatter". Was this an occupational designation? If they were
hatters, was this at a time when hatters used lead in the making of hats?
I don't know of any geographic location in Goochland that was designated by
that term. Does anyone have that knowledge?
Bonnie
