I am looking for a source that might have a record of the dates (in London),
etc. of ordinations of Ministers for the Church of England., ca 1770s
I have records of my 4 g grandf5ather, Rev. John Hyde Saunders' (later of
Southam Parish in Powhatan Co) approximate date of departure (from Norton
Papers at Williamsburg) , and of his return (from LVA digital records). I
also have records, courtesy of Wm & Mary College, of his expulsion from said
instituion in 1763. And I have his bio in "Part II – A List of the
Colonial Clergy in Virginia From 1607 to 1785. Compiled by the Reverend
Edward Lewis Goodwin, D.D"
In additon to his education, post Wm & Mary departure, I would dearly love
to find his equivalent of the following record sent to me from a fellow
researcher on the VA-Roots list -- "Thomas Martin was ordained a deacon in
the Church of England in the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace, London,
England on June 14, 1767. Ordination to the priesthood followed on June 24,
1767."
I have searched through the Library of Congress catalog, local libraries and
come up empty.
I have inserted my vignettes below. Rev. Saunders Expulsion from Wm & Mary
(for which I always enjoy entertaining speculation on what he did, as he did
NOT go quickly when requested), the ref in Norton papers recommending on his
journey to London, record of return passage.
(FYI, John Hyde Saunders' daughter Elizabeth, married Lipscomb Wash. Their
daughter Caroline married Archibald Bolling Baugh. I have alot of Saunders
information.)

EXPULSION FROM WM & MARY (from Wm & Mary staff) -- What do you think he did?
"May 10, 1763
At a Meeting of the President and Masters of William and Mary College
Present
The Revd Mr. William Yates President, Emmanuel Jones, William Small, Richard
Graham and Jas Horrocks
Whereas John Hyde Saunders has lately behaved himself in a very impudent &
unheard of Manner to the Master of the Grammar School and when call’d upon by
the President & Masters to give his Reasons for the same, he not only
insolently behaved himself to them, but likewise absolutely refused to comply
with the stated Rules of the College, unless agreeable with his own Opinion.
He was then, desir’d to leave College, but he absolutely refus’d to do it
unless he was regularly expelled. As this is a Piece of Behavior that ought
to be discouraged, and which deserves our severest Animadversion & Punishment
We do hereby declare the said John Hyde Saunders to be publicly expell’d the
College, and strictly charge all the Young Gentlemen who belong to us as not
to entertain or associate with the said Saunders in the Limits of the College
under Pain of a severe Punishment. And we likewise order the said Saunders
immediately to quite College or we shall be under the disagreeable Necessity
of having him punish’d by a Civil Magistrate.

MY INFO ON RETURN VOYAGE (LVA WEBSITE), Courtesy of another researcher on
this list -- "From notes on colonial Virginia ministers that John Hyde
Saunders received 20 pounds from the British Treasury towards the cost of his
passage to Virginia on Oct. 16, 1772. This is from Treasury, General
Accounts, Quarterly, 31/284."
