AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY
SOURCE ADDED TO DIGITAL LIBRARY
The latest addition to our Digital Library is Joan W. Peters’ work, Slave and Free Negro Records from the Prince William County Court Minute and Order Books, 1752-1763, 1766-1769, 1804-1806, 1812-1814, 1833-1865 (Broad Run, Va.: Albemarle Research, 1996). Click on the following link http://eservice.pwcgov.org/library/digitalLibrary/index.htm <http://eservice.pwcgov.org/library/digitalLibrary/index.htm> and find it under Historic Records, 1700-1800. It covers all mentions of African Americans found in those records, including registrations of slaves and free Negroes, emancipations, arrests and lawsuits. The database is keyword searchable (use CTRL+F). It does not cover persons mentioned in deeds, wills, inventories, sales or tax lists. There are also gaps in the court minutes as shown in the years of coverage. We are grateful to Joan for allowing us to post her work online.

Sign language interpretation is available for Prince William Public Library programs if requested at least three weeks in advance. HEADSTONE RECORDS FOR U.S. MILITARY VETERANS
Presented by Claire Kluskens
Significant Federal involvement in permanent recognition of the final resting place of deceased U.S. military personnel began with the establishment of the first national military cemeteries in 1862. This lecture focuses on records of headstones provided for U.S. military veterans buried in nonfederal cemeteries, 1879 and later. Whether or not the stone is extant, these records may provide valuable information. The speaker, Claire Kluskens, is Reference and Projects Archivist for the National Archives. The talk is scheduled for Thursday, November 14 at 11.m. at Bull Run Regional Library.

USING NATIONAL ARCHIVES
MILITARY RECORDS ONLINE

The National Archives holds Federal military service records from the Revolutionary War to 1912. Military records from World War I to the present are held in the National Military Personnel Records Center (NPRC), in St. Louis, Missouri. Learn what you can, and cannot yet, access online from National Archives Military Records Specialist Marie Varrelman Melchiori, CG, CGL.

GENEALOGY 101
Presented by Beverly Veness
Those curious about their family history have an opportunity to learn about methods, strategies and resources for tracing their roots. This free 90-minute program, conducted by Beverly Veness of the RELIC staff, will highlight the numerous free genealogical resources available at RELIC and will explore basic techniques for tracking ancestors.

GENEALOGY 201: BEYOND THE BASICS

Genealogy 101 introduced basic resources and techniques for researching your family's history. Genealogy 201 presents alternate resources to enhance your family's history and advanced search techniques to help maximize your results from online databases including census records, passenger lists, maps, and books. RELIC's Tish Como will present this program on Thursday, January 9, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Chinn Park Regional Library, 13065 Chinn Park Drive, Prince William, VA 22192. The program will be repeated on Thursday, January 16, at 11 a.m. at Bull Run Regional Library.

“Genealogy Doctor” Accepting Appointments for Research Help
Don Wilson, head of RELIC, sets aside time each month for free private sessions to mentor persons researching their family history. A thirty-minute session can be used to discuss and analyze an historical or genealogical problem that has stumped you.
