If you want a digital map that is free, you can look at
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic where you can enter a name of a
"populated place," a lake, rapids, school and others. It can find a place
even if it has a historical name. There are several types of maps. The one
which used to be best was a "tiger" map. It had county lines, water
features, etc. TheHometownLocator map seems to be a good substitute. Each
place is identified with name, county, elevation, latitude and longitude,
the state, map name and date when entered. Note that if you bookmark the
site, you need to get the name from the FAQs area (next to the red "Stop! Do
not bookmark...") or above which is different from what you will see on the
page itself.

The maps available now include Expedia, Yahoo, Mapquest, Google, Microsoft
Virtual and others. You can zero in on the site down to the street level in
some maps or move out to see the surrounding area. You can also buy good
quality maps from there if you still prefer that option. (See the Homepage)

Subject: [VA-ROOTS] Fry & Jefferson Map

I wish to purchase a large copy of the Fry and Jefferson map of Virginia and
surrounding states. I need a copy that has sharp details, such as the names
and places noted on the map.

I need the map to track several families and find this map to be an
excellent visual for this purpose.

Thanking everyone in advance for reading this message and for replying.
Poldi
