I sent a reply off list to the person who asked this question.

Depends on your geography - I am stuck in the middle of Wyoming with a
library with less than 15 books on genealogy - and and LDS library that is
only open 12 hours a week - mostly when I am at work - and with all years of
the Census, now - plus other items - Ancestry.com is worth it's weight in
gold to "me". I can sit home at night searching census or whatever. (it
will be even better when all the indexes are completed - but have made out
pretty well with the 1930 being unindexed - I locate them on the 1920 index
and apply to the 1930 and am hitting about 8 out of 10 this way)

When something is "incomplete" at least it gives you enough info to order the
original document - so still valuable - when you don't have any other way to
get the info of where to order. Too many times I think that a piece of info
will be in a certain place - only to find out it's several counties away or
in another state.

The SSDI is the most updated one on the internet. The one on the LDS site is
at least a year behind Ancesty.com. And I like the fact that Ancestry.com
will generate your letter to SS for you.

With Ancestry.com - I have the basic and census subs. - didn't do the English
and Irish records as I have all my English folks tracked - and haven't found
an Irishman in the bunch. So far, what I have seen of the newspaper subs
part - it was not worth it - as the papers I have seen referenced were not in
the areas that I needed.
