I doubt the Walker connection. While Timothy and Maria Gilbert gave VA as birth state on 1860, on the 1870 and 1880 they gave NC. The Walkers say VA.
Do you have his complete military file from NARA? It may contain much more info than is on the internet. Make sure you ask for everything that is in his file.
I looked in NC 1850 for him and the Geo. W. Gilbert age 28 listed with him on the 1860 but did not see them.
