If game were that scarce the native americans probably had nothing to trade or give to others. They may have been starving, themselves, but possibly had other tribes in their association to be able to appeal to for supplies. They may not have remained in the area. 

The English settlers wouldn't have had those options. The disappearance of the first colony would have been fresh in their minds. I can understand why they wouldn't have ventured far - even to look for food - just in case supplies arrived from London.

I saw the article before Mr. Tarlton posted it.  I do not believe the
Indian's did it. One must not forget - the Indian's were very self
sufficient..We were not.
