The LVA web site includes one page from a "Bickley family Bible record,
1736-1761," consisting of a list of births followed by three or four
"sureties" for each birth. The image is at
http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/Bible/24163/index.html, and a transcription
is at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/bibles/vabibles-4.txt

Could "surety" simply be the writer's way of referring to godparents,
or does this refer to some other concept?

By the way, I'm not researching the Bickley family, but rather a few of
the Pollards named as "sureties" near the bottom of the page.

Thanks.

Scott
