My ancestor, Thomas Mylum (Millim), was noted to be a "Chain Carrier" on
three land surveys in Orange County in the 1740s.
Does anyone know how long and how heavy survey chains were? Were there
special requirements to be a Chain Carrier on land
surveys? What was the pay, if any? And any other information about this
position which you might have. Or please refer me to a good reference.

Thank you in advance, William Milam
