this is a somewhat "touchy" question that was inspired by the recent
post "RE: CHANDLER, Adolphus Halifax Co. VA 1870."
I am approaching a point in my own research where (like
[log in to unmask]) I will be able to identify the "last slave owner"
for one of my relatives.
I was wondering if anyone has been successful at approaching descendants
of their ancestor's "last slave owner" for additional (non-public)
information. If so, what is the best way to approach them? What are
the no-no's, etc? I'm also curious how people who descend from
someone's hypothesized "last slave owner" have responded in the past.
please feel free to post or send me a message privately at

thanks sincerely,
Jonathan Taylor

Subject: CHANDLER, Adolphus Halifax Co. VA 1870
Greetings,
Looking for info on a white Adolphus Chandler.
Evidence suggests that Adolphus might have owned some of my ancestors.
Adolphus was b. abt. 1816, s/o Hardaway Chandler & Elizabeth D.
Fulkerson.
Adolphus died Dec. 15, 1872 from pneumonia.
Siblings of Adolphus were said to have been Maria, Judith, and David.
