I ran a quick check for you through Ancestry and World Vital Records  
but couldn't find a death record for him either.  He may not have had  
a social security number as it didn't come around until 1937 and  
wasn't required of all employers.  You might try finding union records  
or others for the Chicago police department. Try the death indexes for  
Chicago    http://www.deathindexes.com/illinois/cook.html.  The  
Newberry Library in Chicago has a good genealogy section and is  
usually pretty helpful with where to go to find info.
