I imagine different states had different rules. Am told some states never
awarded widows pensions. (example Missouri)

Also, it may be a myth, but supposedly some of the real elderly veterans
"married" their very young relatives so they would receive a pension the
rest of their lives. Some girls as young as 14 and I assume they began to
receive the pension immediately upon the veteran's death.
