Indeed, such encouraged and quite legal co-ventures as stated by Pat were not uncommon, and professional servant hunters here and abroad were many.

Still again, headrights that instead were at the cutting edge of the law, yet ignored, are easily found in Nugent. Just a few illustrations will serve to reveal the active market and exchanges in such rights: the headrights by which John Carter gained 300 acres in 1643 are identical to those used by Lawrence Peters in 1647; similarly Francis Morgan in 1652 are the same as those used by John Wyre, et al, in 1654; Anthony Fulgham used the same named rights twice to gain 2 separate and distinct tracts; and Henry Dale in 1690 claimed 16 headrights for passages by Wm. Odean and just 2 years later Joseph Hollowell claimed 12 more rights for the same man (to have made that many voyages in that period, Odean would have set an all time speed record to and fro the old country :-).

For those who have further interest, you might look at my article in Heritage Quest, Issue #36, Sept./Oct. 1991, wherein I detail transfers of all sorts, descent of such rights to heirs and legatees, and sales of tracts by owners of rights, after which they again claimed land by those same headrights. All in all, it is a complicated subject, no generalization is worth a damn, and headrights may be expected to appear in all activities similar to those involving any other property rights owned by men. Paul

PS: All should remember that many errors appear in Nugent and the better source is at VA Archives at this URL
