Many thanks, Brent, this site is worth exploring.  Aside
form the runaway ads, there are  many reproductions of early
illustrations showing both customs, clothing and housing  of
the slavery period.   Also great additional  source
material.  I'll use this site more than once!  --Joanne

There is a splendid web resource, Virginia Runaways, that
reprints 18th
century runaway advertisements from Virginia newspapers.
Those who ran
away were slaves, indentured servants, and some deserters
from the army.
In many instances the advertisement contained a physical
description of
the person and what the person wore or might have been
wearing. You can
search the advertisements by many categories, including, I
think,
costume.
