Meeting Announcement
Date: Tuesday, October 8, 2002
Time: 5:00-6:00 PM Registration/Networking/Cash Bar
6:00-7:00 PM Dinner
7:00-8:00 Presentation
Place: Place: Holiday Inn-North (This is our new location)
801 East Parham Rd
Richmond, VA 23227
Topic: Electronic Records Preservation- Paper and microfilm are both
proven long term analog methods for storing information. As they are
replaced with digital options, managers have to plan for the long-term
maintenance of these digital records. A cd-rom may physically last 100
years but will the software and hardware be available to read the data on
it? Do I use a CD-ROM, a DVD, a RAID device, or both analog and digital
devices? What do I have to think about before I develop a new system?
This presentation is about the long-term preservation issues of
electronic/digital records, some actions you can do today to preserve your
electronic records and what the current thinking and research is going on
in this area. This will not be a technical discussion, blue laser or red,
but rather a general discussion. Any time you develop an electronic records
creating or keeping system you need to consider not only the short term but
also the long-term implications of the medium you choose.
Speaker: Bob Nawrocki is the Electronic Records Coordinator for the Records
and Imaging Services Division in the Library of Virginia. He is responsible
for dealing with electronic records issues facing the Commonwealth of
Virginia. Previously Bob spent two years as a contractor with the Air Force
working on their Integrated Digital Environment. His experience involves
working for state and the federal governments as well as private industry.
Bob is a Certified Records Manager and has a Masters of Science in Library
and Information Science from The Catholic University of America. He is an
adjunct faculty member with Catholic University teaching Information
Systems for Libraries and Information Centers.
