This is a press release from the Jamestown-Yorktown FOundation, which operates a replica of the fort built as the 1957 festival park NEAR Jamestown Island, and now with refurbished (with a good exhibit that opened a few years ago) as "Jamestown Settlement."
The more exciting activity is Bill Kelso's archaeology at the 1607 fort site (and related 17th-century sites) on the island itself at Jamestown. Kelso's project is separate from the above, and is being conducted under the aegis of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, founded in the 1890s expressly to save the oldest portions of Jamestown Island, which it still owns and administers. The rest of the island is owned and administered by the National Park Service.
The planning for 2007 is a lot more complex than this forwarded press release suggests - that but gets into current events far afield from Virginia history, e.g. traffic routes, zoning, wetlands, tourism marketing, etc.
For the news about Kelso's fascinating discoveries on Jamestown island, go to www.apva.org and then click on the "Jamestown Rediscovery" link.

   Jon Kukla

PS: Candor, I suppose, requires the disclaimer that I've worked with the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation on various projects over the years, and have also served on Kelso's advisory committee for Jamestown Rediscovery since the beginning of his project.
