Friends and colleagues:

I recently received this query from a colleague, who is looking for a reliable citable figure. None of the sources I have readily to hand are sufficiently precise.

Peter Wood estimates the white population of Virginia in 1790 as 442,100, which is very close to the figure reported in the 1790 census. But of course that number includes children and women.

Is there anyone recently who has worked on the historical demography of Virginia? Does anyone know if there are historical demographers out there who have come up with a reasonable estimate for the adult white male population in late 18th century Virginia?

Many thanks, in advance . . .

Kevin
