If memory serves from our visit to Monticello several years back and a bit
of "Jeffersonian history", Thomas installed a device in the stream at the
bottom of the hill which today is called a "Hydraulic Ram". Although this
device pumps a very small percentage of the water it needs to operate, it
is capable of lifting water considerable distances and runs without
attendance night and day. Here in Oregon, the State Parks Department uses
many of them even today to provide drinking and irrigation water in the
parks where electric or other pumping power is not available. To watch one
work, it would be easy to call it a "fountain".
