Washington History, a richly illustrated, semiannual, refereed journal
published by The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., seeks articles on
the history of the Washington metropolitan area that appeal to scholars,
students, and the general public. Manuscripts must be sound in scholarship,
fully referenced with endnotes and invitingly written.
The journal seeks articles on all aspects of metro Washington area history:
social, cultural, architectural, urban and political history, and
historical geography. The journal also seeks to cover the full
chronological scope of the city's history. While manuscripts on Washington
as the federal capital are welcome, they must relate the subject matter in
some significant way to life of the residential and commercial city.
Recent issues have featured articles about growing up in Washington,
electrician George C. Maynard's turn-of-the-century fight to bring the
telephone to Washington, the material culture of D.C. political campaigns,
citizen activism over 1950s and 1960s highway construction, the history of
the metro system, and Clara Barton. Each issue also features book reviews
and a milestone column noting significant events in the history of
Washington's people and institutions.
The semi-annual Washington History is a benefit of membership (students
$25, individuals $40) in the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. Single
copies of issues may be purchased for $7 from Historical Society of
Washington's Museum Shop, 1307 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W., open
Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Copies may also be purchased by phone
