Annette Gordon-Reed's biography of the Hemings family, The Hemingses of
Monticello: An American Family, has just been selected as a finalist for the
National Book Award in the Non-Fiction category (along with Drew Gilpin
Faust's new book on the cultural impact of the Civil War, This Republic of
Suffering, among other contenders).
