I'd suggest you search the GW Papers on the Library of Congress
website for the word "smart" to see how GW used it. The phrase "too
smart for me" strikes me as a modernism. You're right--the Diaries are
online and searchable, so if he wrote it in the Diary it should turn
up. Perhaps this phrase will join "George Washington's Prayer Book" on
the list of mis-attributions and fabrications.
