I have been transcribing the taxable property of Huntingdon County,
Pennsylvania for the year 1786. If one accepts that farming ratios of
horses, cows and acreage is not much different in Pennsylvani from that in
Virginia the first few names of persons with over 140 acres on a page
selected with my eyes closed revealed:

Michael, Andrew 150 acres 3 horses 4 cattle
Mackrel, Benjamin 350 1 1
Morris, William 300 3 4
Murphey, Thomas 150 2 2
Morgan, John 230 2 3
Persons, John 150 2 1
Proser, Charles 168 2 1
Pollard, William 2,200 1 1 [ must
have been a very tired horse]
Rose, Jaconias 150 1 1

So is seems the norm that the inventory would support that amount of land.
