Longtime Virginia Commonwealth University professor Philip J. Schwarz died
last week, I have been informed. He was a good friend and accomplished
scholar whose contributions to the historical literature on Virginia and
slavery were numerous and very important.

Va-Hist subscribers will recall his 1988 L.S.U. Press book, *Twice
Condemned: Slaves and the Criminal Laws of Virginia, 1705-1865*, his 1996
University of Georgia Press book, *Slave Laws in Virginia*, his 2001
University Press of Virginia book, *Migrants Against Slavery: Virginians
and the Nation*, as well as numerous important articles in the scholarly
journals and lectures in various public venues.
