If you are looking for early Virginia history, try
THE VIRGINIA EXPERIMENT [:] THE OLD
DOMINION'S ROLE IN THE MAKING OF AMERICA
(1607-1781) by Alf J. Mapp, Jr. Published in 1957.

It is especially good because of the extensive
documentation and bibliography.
