JPAdams is incorrect when he refers to the emancipation of Sally Hemings.
There are no emancipation papers regarding her. She was never legally freed
but "given her time" after Jefferson's death. She lived in Charlottesville
with her sons Eston and Madison (both manumitted in Jefferson's will) until
her death in 1835/36.
