Mr. Forest, the end of slavery completely transformed the South, including
Virginia, for all its inhabitants, whether or not they had been either
slaves or slaveholders.  Its impact on day-to-day life was actually far
greater than that of the American Revolution, despite the importance of that
struggle.

Now we learn from Steve Corneliussen how important Fortress Monroe was in
Virginia's -- and the South's -- pivotal transformation from an economy
based on slavery to one based in other means of production.   Why do you
think that such a place would be "really only of interest to some small
segment of American  society"?
