The Jefferson Library's "Serpentine Walls" file confirms the use of
"Jefferson fence" for brick serpentine walls. the file contains information
on various prototypes and precendents, some of which TJ may have seen.

Isn't a Jefferson fence the official name for the serpentine brick walls
that started at UVa and now are found all over the place?

List members:

I ran across a memorandum of agreement for the sale of some land in
Rockbridge County, ca 1852. The final sentence of the agreement asserted
the the buyer would "agrees to put up a good and lawful Jefferson fence."

Any ideas as to what a "Jefferson fence" looked/looks like.

Thanks,

Jim Watkinson
