I am presenting editing the Journal of Nicholas Cresswell. On Oct 12, 1775,
he was in Old Town, Maryland.  He wrote: "Got to Old Town in Maryland 14
miles from Fort Cumberland. Lodged at one Rollins Tavern." The next day he
wrote: " This is a pretty little town for such an inconvenient situation,
some good land about it first settled by [ blank ] Cresap an Englishman
from Shipton in Craven. Crossed the Potowmack River at the conjunction of
the North and South Branches met a Woman with two small Children in great
distress on whom I bestow my last Shirt except that I had on, crossed the
Spring Gap mountain and Dined at Rinkers Tavern."
I guess this doesn't help much, but it may be of interest.
