According to a press release sent by Historic Petersburg Foundation,  
this week the archaeological work once again began on the site of  
historic Golden Ball Tavern on Old Street.
The dig will continue through July 18, 2010, and will mark the final  
of three consecutive summers of this grant funded project.
The goal is to learn more about the inhabitants of Petersburg from the  
Revolutionary period.
Volunteers will work on the site primarily from Wednesday to Saturday  
each week, and you may observe them as they reveal the history of the  
tavern.
The Golden Ball Tavern was a popular 18th century establishment, and  
was one of the key places to meet and greet locals.
During the Revolution, the British quartered there, and at one point  
in its history it hosted the Petersburg Jockey Club.
It was also the site of Petersburg's first elections after becoming  
incorporated as a town in 1784.
The Golden Ball enjoyed several other incarnations, including as a  
restaurant and grocery store.
It was demolished in 1944.
The site is now owned by Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc.
