When I worked in Special Collections at the University of Virginia I had to
do research on this topic about 20 years ago. It's an enduring myth.
Special Collections holds a 1951 article by Monroe F. Cockrell (Broadside
1951.C63) disproving the story which has several variations such as Rommell
at Gettysburg. For a fun read find the novel "Rommell and the Rebel" by
Lawrence Wells which has Rommell visiting Ole Miss in the 30s and being
escorted to the scene of some of the exploits of Forrest by none other than
William Faulkner.
