Anne, and others,

The city of Petersburg created a brochure highlighting the city's African
American heritage, with a map to specific sites, such as the historic
churches, People's Memorial Cemetery (across Crater Road from Blandford
Cemetery), etc. I don't know exactly who to contact or whether the brochures
still are readily available, but I would imagine that a check of the city's
Web site would give contact information for the city manager, mayor, or
someone else who might be able to respond.

As for Leonard Grimes, off the top of my head, he was a slave in northern
Virginia who was arrested and imprisoned for Underground Railroad activities.
He then went to Boston and became pastor of a leading African American Baptist
congregation. He was a man of consequence and was prominent in such
controversies as the battle over school segregation in the 1850s and the
arrest and return to Virginia of the fugitive slave Anthony Burns.
