A few weeks ago we discussed the matter of omitting things from diaries
and the like.  In the spirit of that time-honored research strategy of
stumbling across something when you're looking for something else, I pass
along this statement from a translation of the informative Memoirs of
Philip Mazzei, published in the 2d series of the William and Mary
Quarterly in 1930 (p.14):

"Here is recounted an amusing, though vulgar, anecdote, thought better not
to be translated."
