Hi Folks,

Here are a few items for your consideration.

1. On this Thursday, February 24, at noon, Dr. Edward Lengel will be speaking at the Virginia Historical Society on his new book Inventing George Washington: America’s Founder, in Myth and Memory. You will likely remember Ed’s excellent presentation to us on the Washington Papers in 2009. Check this past Sunday’s Flair section of the Richmond Times Dispatch for a free admission coupon. The VHS site is http://www.vahistorical.org/news/lectures_banner.htm#washington.

2. Speaking of Washington, here’s information about a new web site opening today.

”Brand new website on George Washington opening on February 22, 2011! http://www.firstinpeace.com/ The site includes a blog, comprehensive background information on Washington's life, and a message board for the community. Eventually, the site will become one of the premier George Washington centers on the internet and a meeting point for Washington scholars and enthusiasts alike.”

3. Save the date – Saturday, April 16. We’ve made arrangements with Richmond Discoveries to conduct a Richmond Revolutionary Patriots - Cemetery Walking Tour of both St. John’s Church Cemetery and Shockoe Hill Cemetery. There are about 55 patriot graves at the two locations. We’ll start at St. Johns at 10 AM and end at Shockoe at about 12:15 PM. This will be a car caravan, with no bus involved. The cost will $10 per person, with proceeds to be used by Richmond Discoveries to provide Alive! educational programs to schools with limited funding. There will be no maximum number on this tour, so reservations are not an issue. More details will follow next month, but please mark your calendar to attend. www.richmonddiscoveries.com

4. This was passed along by Bruce Venter concerning Jefferson.

Jefferson's books found in Mo. university library
By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH Associated Press

Dozens of Thomas Jefferson's books have been found in the rare books collection at Washington University in St. Louis. Scholars are now poring through the 28 titles and 74 volumes, searching for the occasional handwritten note from the nation's third president. And librarians say it's possible more of Jefferson's books will be found in the school's collection. The school announced the discovery Monday, on Presidents Day. Librarians say Jefferson's books were sold after his death to settle debts. His granddaughter, Ellen Wayles Randolph Coolidge, bid on many of the books. When she and her husband died, their library was donated to Washington University, but there was no indication any of the books belonged to Jefferson. The school discovered the connection after getting a tip from a Jefferson scholar.

5. Here’s information about Barnet Schecter’s new book George Washington’s America: A Life Through His Maps. Barnet will be speaking at the Virginia Historical Society on June 9.

You can also hear a 15-minute NPR interview by Robin Young on "Here and Now," WBUR-FM, Boston: http://www.hereandnow.org/2010/11/30/george-washington-maps and a five-minute C-SPAN appearance:

            6. Be sure to occasionally check the SCAR calendar maintained by Charles Baxley. http://www.southerncampaign.org/coe.php It is far and away the best compilation of upcoming events related to the revolution.

            7. And finally.. the next meeting of the American Revolution Round Table of Richmond will be on March 16, with Marc Leepson speaking on his Lafayette, The Idealist General. The regular reminder will follow. See you then.
