In my /Twice Condemned: Slaves and the Criminal Laws of Virginia/,
86-87, Table 8, I used several of the sources others have mentioned
concerning the 1730 insurrection. Gooch to Board of Trade, Sept. 14,
1730, Feb. 12, 1730/31, and his Proclamation, Oct. 28, 1730, all in CO
5/1322, fols. 158, 161-63, 212-13; Minutes of Dr. Bray's Associates,
Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Oct. 2, Nov. 12, 1730, I, 13,
15, Va Col Rec Project [VCRP]; James Blair to Bishop of London, May 14,
1731, Corres. of the Bishop of London, 110, Fulham Palace Papers, 15,
VCRP; Gooch to Bishop of London, May 31, 1731, ibid., 111; Aptheker,
/American Negro Slave Revolts/, 179-80; Tate, /Negro in
Eighteenth-Century Williamsburg/, 112. A more recent publication:
Anthony Parent, /Foul Means/, 159-62, adds good material on what he
calls "the Chesapeake Rebellion of 1730."
