Dear List Members,

Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 15, at noon, Amy Murrell Taylor will be at
the Library of Virginia to discuss her new book, The Divided Family in
Civil War America, published by the University of North Carolina Press.
The Civil War has long been described as a war pitting "brother against
brother." The divided family is an enduring metaphor for the divided
nation, but it also accurately reflects the reality of America's
bloodiest war. Connecting the metaphor to the real experiences of
families whose households were split by conflicting opinions about the
war, Dr. Taylor's book provides a social and cultural history of the
divided family in Civil War America.

Dr. Taylor's talk will be followed by a book signing sponsored by the
Virginia Shop, where copies of the book are now available.

Dr. Taylor conducted much of the research for The Divided Family in
Civil War America while pursuing graduate studies in history at the
University of Virginia, where she received her Ph.D. in 2001. She is
currently an assistant professor of history at the State University of
New York, Albany. Her research and teaching focus primarily on the
Civil War, the South, and the history of the family in the United
States. She is also interested in connecting history to new media,
having worked as a researcher and project manager on the web-based
digital archive, "The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the
American Civil War."

The Library of Virginia's book-talk series will continue on April 21
with David L. Holmes, Walter G. Mason Professor of Religious Studies at
the College of William and Mary, speaking on his new book, The Faiths of
the Founding Fathers, published by the Oxford University Press. We
have some exciting talks in May and June as well. Please check the
Library's upcoming events by clicking on "News and Events" at:
