For an academic and historical look at the evolution of the flag during the
Civil War era check out <A HREF="http://www.confederateflags.org/">
confederateflags.org</A>.  All of the contributors who work gratis have impressive
historical, museum  and preservation credentials.  The website gives the historical
reasons for the various flags  and is primarily oriented at the CW era only.
