Regarding Suzanne Levy's query -- the Executive Papers in
the state archives might have more information on the fate
of the slave in question. The records of condemned and
transported slaves might have transcripts of the
county trial and some record of the final disposition. I
read one case where a slave destined for "transportation"
(for the flimsiest reason) had his case reviewed by the
governor who reduced the sentence to 10 years hard labor on
public works.
