Jon,
The following URL address listed below is written by:
"Historian John Buescher who is an author and professor who
formerly headed Tibetan language broadcasts at Voice of America. His Ph.D.
is from the University of Virginia and he has published extensively on the
history of Tibetan and Indian Buddhism and on the history of 19th-century
American Spiritualism."
The follow site is titled "How Much Have Federal Census Takers Made
Through the Years?"
He comments on the 1870 census and invites comments concerning the
census as a means to widen his scope of knowledge concerning it.
Perhaps you might contact him through his site and he may be able to
help you with your questions and you may be able to help him with his
questions.
