I have found the Main Reading Room to be faster than in your past 
experience, usually within an hour or two.
 From distant repositories, you may want to order ahead.
I would definitely check with the appropriate room to see about ordering 
in advance. (Can do that online.)
You will need a reader's card- they expire after a year or two, but that 
takes only a half hour.
