Very interesting, Doug -- thanks for posting this.

There is also an absolutely fascinating article in today's New York  
Times on the discovery of a clay bundle associated with African  
religious practices and dating from circa 1700-1720 in Annapolis,  
Maryland:

Of course, Maryland isn't Virginia -- but the two colonies shared so  
much, economically and culturally, including the source regions for  
their slaves, that this remarkable find has exciting implications for  
early Virginia history as well.
