churches in the 20 years before the Civil War see Mitchell Snay's Gospel of
Disunion: Religion and Separatism in the Antebellum South. Chapel Hill:  The

  The Methodists, like the Baptists and Presbyterians ultimately split
between

 northern and southern branches essentially over slavery. In the 1830s (or

 1840s) the Methodist Episcopal South denomination arose as a pro-slavery

 version of Methodism.
