We are all assuming, of course, that the book was published in the USA.
Other countries, especially the UK, have a longer period of time and a
different interpretation.  And the USA, if the person is dead, and the
copyright has not been renewed, then you may be clear.  I would check with
the Library of Congress's Copyright Office and check for myself.
