The Virginia Continental Line consisted of all troops serving
the Continental Congress during the War, as opposed to the
Virginia State Line, which reported to the Governor of Virginia.
The term "line" generally referred to regular infantry.

Virginia Continental Troops served in most theatres of operation
during the war. The Continental Line as a whole was divided into
the Northern Army and the Southern Army. From there, Major
Generals commanded Divisions, Brigadier Generals Commanded
Brigades, and Colonels commanded Regiments or Battalions.

Generally speaking, a regiment consisted of troops and officers
from the same state (1st Virginia Regiment, 7th Virginia Regiment,
Gaskins' Virginia Battalion) and was either numbered or named
after its commander.

Hopefully, your ancestor made a pension application after the war.
If so, he had to prove his service to the United States, and should
have indicated the units he was in or at least the officers he served
under.

Once you have that information, a good first reference is "A Guide to
Virginia Military Organizations of the American Revolution" by
Sanchez-Saavedra (Library of Virginia). This book is not difinitive,
and is not wholly accurate, but it is a good jumping off point.
Keep in mind that the book does not index soldiers, only certain
officers, so you will at least need a name of an officer or unit relating
to the soldier in question.
