RELIC PRESENTS -  UPCOMING PROGRAMS

Following are upcoming programs at Bull Run Regional Library related to
local history and genealogy.  Regular times for monthly programs are the
fourth Tuesday of each month (except December) at 7:30 p.m.  Group
programs are held in the Library's community room.  Sign language
interpretation of library programs is available if requested three weeks
in advance.  Funding for RELIC programs is supported by grants from the
Friends of the Central and Bull Run Libraries.

   

January 23 - Family Search Indexing: A New Vision for Online Genealogy.

February 27 - Network to Freedom:  Tracing the Underground Railroad in
Prince William County.

The Genealogy Doctor is In - First and third Thursday of each month.

FAMILY SEARCH INDEXING:

A NEW VISION FOR ONLINE GENEALOGY

Julie Gideon, manager of the Centreville (Va.) Family History Center
will describe the Family Search Indexing project, already underway.
Learn about the scope of the plan to digitize, index, and post to the
internet, the microfilm archive of the Family History Library in Salt
Lake City.  You can also learn how you can participate in this ambitious
project that will make a wide variety of genealogical materials, from
around the world, easy to access.

            This free program is scheduled for Tuesday, January 23, at
Bull Run Regional Library, beginning at 7:30 p.m.  To reserve a seat

NETWORK TO FREEDOM:

TRACING THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY

            The Underground Railroad was an informal network of people
and institutions who helped slaves escape to freedom in the years before
the Civil War.  Network to Freedom is a national program to recognize
sites that were significant in that struggle.  Historian Pat Knock will
present an overview of the program and how she was able to put
Leesylvania State Park on the roster of registered sites.   Learn what
sources are available to identify and document other potential sites in
our area.

            This free program will be presented on Tuesday, February 27,
at 7:30 p.m. at Bull Run Regional Library.  To reserve a seat contact

THE GENEALOGY DOCTOR IS IN

 

For tips on starting your own research or to help solve an historical or
genealogical problem that has stumped you, schedule a private, 30-minute
visit with RELIC's Don Wilson.  Generally the First and Third Thursdays
of each month, 10:00 a.m. - 12 noon, at Bull Run Regional Library.

 

Upcoming available dates:   December 7, January 4 and 18.

Choice of times:  10:00, 10:45, 11:30 a.m.

ACTIVITIES IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY

Biggest Book Sale of the Year.

Sat. Dec. 9, 10am-5pm and Sun. Dec. 10, noon-5pm, Bull Run Regional

A Civil War Christmas at Liberia Plantation.  

Saturday, December 9, 5:30-9:00 p.m.  During the Christmas of 1861, not
long after the Battle of First Manassas, the Weir family of Liberia
Plantation celebrated a quiet holiday in the company of Confederate
soldiers camped around their home.  The Manassas Museum will recreate
that moment in time during the fifth annual Civil War Christmas at
Liberia Plantation.  Costumed interpreters, Civil War period music
(Prince William Little Theatre), soldiers' lives (Blackhorse Cavalry)
and a visit with the Weir family in the decorated house.  $15.  Buses
will transport visitors to Liberia from the Museum (9101 Prince William
Street, Manassas) every half hour from 5:30 to 9:00.

Holiday Open Houses at Rippon Lodge and Ben Lomond.

"A Touch of Glass" Exhibition Closes December 31.

The special exhibition area of the Manassas Museum showcases over 200
functional and decorative glass objects, selected from the collection of
Manassas resident Calvin Hackeman.  They include blown, molded, pressed,
cut, stretch, iridescent, painted and etched glass, many pieces dating
from the 19th century.  Special sections of the exhibition include State
Glass featuring Virginia's Galloway pattern, Depression Glass and
Collecting Glass Today.  The exhibition opened October 15 and runs
through December 31.  It is free with regular museum admission.
Manassas Museum is located at 9101 Prince William Street in Manassas.
Admission is $3, with discounts for members, seniors and groups.
