Lonny: You might have some luck in searching the
papers of Governor Henry -- I'm not sure what's extant,
but I know among Jefferson's papers there's a good
number of Febiger letters whixh were part of the
governor's correspondence. You might also check for
letters from the Albemarle County lieutenant; they
frequently reported on desertions (especially whne they
came en masse).

You should also check out John David McBride's
dissertation on manpower in Virginia and the
Revolution; he has some useful material on desertion.
