Brown's book, despite its title, bears reading on this subject--John Kolp builds on and expands from it, in his chapters on Virginia in the recent Virginia history textbook OLD DOMINION, NEW COMMONWEALTH:  A HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, 1607-2007.
