DIRECTOR - ARCHIVAL & INFORMATION SERVICES DIVISION
POSITION #18

        The Library of Virginia is seeking a highly motivated candidate
to direct our Archival & Information Services Division including all
aspects of the Library's comprehensive public service program
encompassing the archival research, library reference, circulation,
interlibrary loan, and stack access departments as well as serve as a
member of the Senior Management Team in setting policy and providing
strategic direction for the Library.  The Division ensures access to the
Library's printed and manuscript holdings and provides research and
reference assistance to government officials, state agencies, historical
and genealogical researchers, and the general public.  The Library of
Virginia serves the archival and research needs of Virginians as the
Commonwealth's archival agency, the reference library at the seat of
government, and as one of the nation's premiere research institutions.

To be considered for the position, candidates must possess the
following:

*       A master's degree from an accredited university with a
concentration in library and information science, history, or other
field related to the Library's mission is required.
*       Considerable experience in program management and administration
in a library, museum, historical society, university, archives or
similar research or educational organization. 
*       Experience in budget preparation and management.
*       Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of
library and archival administration and program management, particularly
in the area of public service.
*       Comprehensive knowledge of US and Virginia history.
*       Working knowledge of computer systems and software currently
used in the library and archival profession.
*       Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing,
conversation, and formal presentations.
*       Demonstrated ability to assemble, organize, motivate and direct
a professional staff.
*       Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of
professional, support and clerical staff and with public officials at
all levels of government
*       Ability to advise agency management on organizational and
operational issues.
