I would recommend Warren Susman's, "Culture as History" See chapter seven: "Culture and Civilization- the Nineteen Twenties." Also, for a look at the Harlem Renaissance, "Rhapsodies in Black- Art of the Harlem Renaissance." Lawrence Levine's "Highbrow Lowbrow- the Emergence of Cultural Hierarchy in America," may be insightful.
