To the extent that a mercantilist means Lincoln was a shopkeeper, I think
you'd better check your sources. Mine tell me that Lincoln was a lawyer by
trade and a politician by avocation.

The Emancipation Proclamation was but the first step in putting all
citizens on equal footing. Lincoln only had power to make such a
declaration with respect to the rebel states who'd made themselves the
enemy of the US government. The Emancipation Proclamation opened the way to
the constitutional amendments that followed.

And, Tom, Lincoln was and is a hero to many Americans and will remain so.
